“Star Wars” fans might not be too happy to hear this news! Taika Waititi, the director behind “Thor: Love and Thunder,” revealed that his movie set in a galaxy far, far away has been put in carbonite. The Academy Award winner is currently busy promoting his new movie, “Klara and the Sun,” featuring “Wednesday” star Jenna Ortega, and he has several other projects he wants to tackle while Lucasfilm explores other priorities.
Taika Waititi’s ‘Star Wars’ Film Is Officially ‘On Ice’
While promoting his new movie, “Klara and the Sun,” Waititi revealed that his “Star Wars” movie, which was first announced in 2020, is currently “on ice.”
“I hate to break this to you, but we’re going to actually put it on ice, and we’re working on a different thing together,” Waititi told Inverse.
His publicist reportedly told him not to share any more details about why he was no longer prioritizing the project.
“Well, there’s your answer,” Waititi said. “I don’t even know how to dress it up or make it even vague.”
“It’s very iced. I’ve got about four other movies I’m trying to do,” he continued. “Ice ages do come to an end… Who knows?”
The Director Previously Addressed The Film In January

At the Sundance premiere of the movie “Fing!”, Waititi told Variety that he was trying to harness the magic of the original trilogy for his movie.
“I’m just trying to go back and harness a little bit more of the fun from the original films, which is what I remember [from] them,” he said at the time.
“The stakes are very high, and there’s serious things going on, but there’s also a lot of fun to be had in those films. That’s what I was trying to bring back,” Waititi continued. “I was trying to work in a world that was a little bit separate to that because they’ve got so many things going on within that space. For me to do something there, it would need to be a little different and a little bit more its own thing.”
Taika Waititi Reportedly Turned In A Script

Former Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy told Deadline during her exit interview in January 2026 that Taika Waititi had “turned in a script that I think is hilarious and great. It’s not just my decision, especially when I’ve got a foot out the door.”
At the time, she revealed that Donald Glover had also turned in a script for a project around his character, a younger Lando Calrissian. The project has been described as both a film and a series at different points in its production. Right now, fans aren’t sure what will come of the project, if anything.
Kennedy also addressed the fate of “The Hunt for Ben Solo” adding, “Steven Soderbergh and Adam Driver turned in a script written by Scott Burns. It was just great. Anything’s a possibility if somebody’s willing to take a risk.”
What Happened To Adam Driver’s ‘Star Wars’ Movie?

Back in October 2025, Adam Driver, who portrayed Kylo Ren and the redeemed Ben Solo in the “Star Wars” sequel trilogy, revealed that he had been working with director Steven Soderbergh and writer Scott Z. Burns on a movie that would take place after his character’s death in 2019’s “The Rise of Skywalker.”
He told the Associated Press that Lucasfilm approved the film, but Disney execs later shut it down.
“We presented the script to Lucasfilm. They loved the idea. They totally understood our angle and why we were doing it,” Driver said at the time. “We took it to Bob Iger and Alan Bergman and they said no. They didn’t see how Ben Solo was alive. And that was that.”
“It was called ‘The Hunt for Ben Solo’ and it was really cool,” Driver added. “But it is no more, so I can finally talk about it.”
Shawn Levy Directed The Next ‘Star Wars’ Film To Hit Theaters

After the disappointment of “The Mandalorian and Grogu” at the box office, Disney hopes to find a hit with Shawn Levy’s “Star Wars: Starfighter,” starring Ryan Gosling.
The film will be the first to take place following the events of 2019’s “The Rise of Skywalker.” It is said to feature a brand new cast of characters and be a standalone adventure, disconnected from the Skywalker Saga. This will be the first time fans will get to see the state of the galaxy following the Battle of Exegol and the fall of the First Order.
“Star Wars: Starfighter” is scheduled to hit theaters on May 28, 2027.
