David Beckham added another milestone to his remarkable career this week, becoming the first footballer to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame as Los Angeles welcomed the opening stages of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The former England captain was honoured during a ceremony in Hollywood attended by wife Victoria Beckham and longtime friend Tom Cruise, who praised Beckham’s rise from a working-class footballer in England to one of the most recognisable figures in global sport and popular culture.
Accepting the honour, Beckham reflected on his journey and the growth of football in the United States, a country that played a significant role in the later stages of his playing career. His move to LA Galaxy in 2007 helped raise the profile of Major League Soccer, while his current role as co-owner of Inter Miami continues to shape the sport’s development in North America.
The celebration came as Los Angeles hosted a star-studded World Cup opening event ahead of the United States’ victory over Paraguay. A host of entertainment and sports figures attended, including Leonardo DiCaprio, Halle Berry, Rob Lowe and Paris Hilton.
Music also took centre stage during the festivities. Performances from Future, Tyla, Anitta, Lisa and Katy Perry brought a festival atmosphere to the stadium, while Canadian singer-songwriter Alanis Morissette delivered a rendition of the Canadian national anthem during ceremonies in Toronto.
The Walk of Fame recognition further cements Beckham’s status as a rare figure whose influence extends well beyond football into entertainment, fashion and global culture.
