Why This R&B Singer Has Beef With ‘Culture Vulture’ Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga might live for the applause, but R&B singer Stephanie Mills isn’t giving her any. On an episode of “The Jason Lee Show,” Mills, who won a Grammy in 1981 for “Never Knew Love Like This Before,” unloaded on the “Paparazzi” singer, claiming she and her team were rude to her years ago.

Grammy-Winning Singer Stephanie Mills Recalls Being Allegedly Mistreated By Lady Gaga

According to Mills, she was asked to perform for the “Abracadabra” singer years ago. Mills claimed Gaga’s managers asked her to sing “Home,” a song from “The Wiz” and one of Gaga’s favorites.

Mills said she initially declined the request, but eventually changed her mind. “I went, and she had her little black dog there and all the other people, and so I sang for her,” Mills recalled before claiming Gaga was incredibly rude to her.

“She didn’t smile. She didn’t do anything. She looked at me like I had two heads,” Mills alleged.

Mills Calls Lady Gaga A ‘Culture Vulture’ After Implying Her Team Held Her Hostage

On “The Jason Lee Show,” Mills revealed that she wasn’t paid for her performance. Instead, a member of Gaga‘s team allegedly offered to take pictures.

“So, I finished singing ‘Home,’ and we took pictures,” Mills said. However, as she went to leave, she said Gaga’s team forced her to delete the photos and implied they held her hostage until she did.

“We were at the elevator getting ready to leave and they came and they said, ‘Delete.’ And they did not let us leave until they saw every picture being deleted,” she recounted.

Lee chimed in, saying the situation sounded “very disrespectful,” which led Mills to call Gaga “a culture vulture.” She added, “Because she was managed by Black men. She did a song with R. Kelly.”

Other Celebrities Have Taken Digs At Lady Gaga Before

While Gaga hasn’t responded to Mills’ claims publicly, this wouldn’t be the first time a celebrity or public figure has taken a dig at the musician.

In 2013, Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine appeared to throw shade at the “Perfect Celebrity” singer on X after she released her album, “Art Pop.”

“Ugh..recycling old art for a younger generation doesn’t make you an artist. It makes you an art teacher,” he wrote. “I unabashedly love writing and performing pop music for both myself AND everyone around me. That’s it. It doesn’t need any extra sauce.”

Although he didn’t mention names, Gaga responded to his tweet a day later, writing, “Uh oh guys the art police is here.”

  • Lady Gaga’s sudden disappearance had her friends wondering.
  • Lady Gaga reportedly feared mercury retrograde could impact her tour.
  • Gaga and her partner launched an AI skin research firm.
  • She crushed the trademark lawsuit over her album name.

Years before that, chaos ensued when Gaga bumped heads with one of pop music’s biggest names: Madonna.

After releasing her LGBTQ+ anthem, “Born This Way,” Madonna rushed to social media to call the track “reductive,” while others pointed to the similarities to her track, “Express Yourself.”

In 2011, Gaga clapped back at a reporter’s “ridiculous” question about the feud, saying she would never be “moronic enough” to steal a melody.

“If you put the songs next to each other, side by side, the only similarities are the chord progression. It’s the same one that’s been in disco music for the last 50 years. Just because I’m the first f—ing artist in 25 years to think of putting it on top 40 radio, it doesn’t mean I’m a plagiarist, it means that I’m f—ing smart. Sorry,” she said.

Gaga Said What She Does Is ‘Different’ Than Madonna

After some time, the beef between the two stars seemed to have cooled. In 2016, Gaga spoke with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe about the comparisons between them and said she and Madonna are “very different.”

“Just say, ‘We’re very different.’ I wouldn’t make that comparison at all and I don’t mean to disrespect Madonna, she’s a nice lady, and she’s had a fantastic huge career, biggest pop star of all time. But I play a lot of instruments. I write all my own music. I spend hours a day in the studio. I’m a producer. I’m a writer. What I do is different,” she finished.
