Tottenham happy to be called name again after previous request to the media

Tottenham have backtracked on their omission of ‘Tottenham’ from club branding – two years after requesting alternative names.

The north London club launched a new ‘brand identity’ in November 2024 that featured changes to their logo and signature font.

It was later revealed that they wrote to broadcasters asking for them to be referred to as either ‘Tottenham Hotspur’ or ‘Spurs’.

‘Tottenham’ was seemingly brushed aside but, as per The Athletic, it could be on its way back.

Fans attending home matches are said to have seen signs that read ‘This is Tottenham‘ upon arrival.

They also launched a short film during the summer called ‘Tottenham ‘Til I Die’, with ‘Hotspur’ being dropped once again.

At the time of writing, the Premier League still call them ‘Tottenham Hotspur’ on their website, although this could change soon.

What did Tottenham want to be called?

The reintegration of ‘Tottenham’ comes after the new brand identity included a club request for what they wanted to be named as.

“When referring to the team or the brand, please use ‘Tottenham Hotspur’, ‘Tottenham Hotspur Football Club’ or ‘THFC’,” said a ‘Brand Playbook’.

It addd: “Never refer to our Club as ‘Tottenham’, ‘Tottenham Hotspur FC’ or ‘TH’.”

Founded in 1882, they were originally named ‘Hotspur Football Club’ and based in Northumberland Park, which is in north Tottenham.

‘Tottenham Hotspur Football Club’ became their official name two years later.

Spurs are back!

After the three-week international break, Spurs return to Premier League action this weekend.

They travel to Manchester United on Saturday evening in search of their first win of the season.

Spurs lost 3-0 at Brentford on the opening weekend before falling to a 2-0 home defeat against Newcastle United.

Back-to-back 0-0 draws with Nottingham Forest and Everton were then followed by a 3-2 loss to Aston Villa.

The results mean they sit bottom of the Premier League table with two points gained from a possible 15.

As things stand, Spurs could be battling against relegation to the Championship yet again.
