Manchester United legend Dwight Yorke has urged Michael Carrick to start Benjamin Sesko consistently.
The Red Devils decided to reinforce the No.9 position by purchasing the Slovenian from RB Leipzig for a big fee last year. He featured as a rotational option last term, scoring 12 goals and registering a solitary assist.
After recovering from his shin injury, he played as a backup option once again before the international break, netting twice in all tournaments this season.
However, Sesko has sustained a fresh shin problem and is set to remain sidelined for an extended period. Now, speaking on talkSPORT, Yorke says (via Metro) that although Sesko is currently injured, Carrick should trust the 23-year-old and start him consistently.
The former forward gave the reason behind his claim as that Sesko possesses the necessary attributes to become a top-class striker, and Carrick should urge his players to feed the former Leipzig star.
Yorke said:
“For me the big question mark there with Carrick, I don’t understand why Sesko doesn’t play. I know he’s injured now but you’ve got to play the guy as a nine. You have to trust the kid, he’s got all the attributes. Yes, he’s come off the bench and scored but you have to push him up top and let the others feed off him.”
Sesko is a 6ft 5in tall striker. He is quick, strong, good in the air, can hold up the play, and is technically sound. Moreover, he can take penalties and works hard without possession.
Carrick urged to sign Sesko
Apart from Sesko, valued at around £63m by Transfermarkt, Carrick currently has Joshua Zirkzee as a specialist striker option. However, the Dutchman has struggled to find his feet in the Premier League since joining from Bologna a couple of years ago.
But he displayed an excellent performance against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday after being introduced as a second-half substitute.
Moreover, Matheus Cunha, Marcus Rashford and Bryan Mbeumo can provide cover in the No.9 position if needed, but they are more comfortable on the flanks.
Meanwhile, after finishing third in the Premier League last campaign, Man Utd have endured a dire start under Carrick this season, languishing in the bottom half of the table with six points from as many matches.
