Man United warned against hiring World Cup manager if Michael Carrick is sacked

Appointing Julian Nagelsmann would not solve Manchester United’s existing on-field woes.

That is according to talkSPORT’s chief football correspondent Alex Crook amid growing pressure on manager Michael Carrick.

The Red Devils boss has endured a poor start to the new season following his permanent appointment in May.

Carrick was rewarded for securing a third place finish and Champions League qualification with a two-year deal at Old Trafford.

However, his side have won just twice in 10 matches in all competitions this term ahead of Wednesday’s clash with Como.

Nagelsmann has emerged as a candidate to replace Carrick in recent days as speculation surrounding his future intensifies.

talkSPORT understands the former Bayern Munich manager has admirers within the Red Devils hierarchy.

Crook is unconvinced by the 39-year-old, though, following his underwhelming exit from the German national team.

He also pinpointed United’s lack of squad strengthening as the reason for their recent form as opposed to Carrick’s management.

His stance echoed recent remarks from defender Lisandro Martinez and former boss Erik ten Hag.

Speaking on the latest episode of talkSPORT’s Inside Devils alongside Flex and Angelina Kelly, Crook explained: “The standards since the start of the season have been so poor, the regression has been stark and I’m not calling for Michael Carrick to be sacked.

“But I agree with Erik ten Hag and I agree with Lisandro Martinez last week. What was the point in just rinsing and repeating?

“You sack another manager, you bring in someone like Nagelsmann, who didn’t cover himself in glory as the Germany boss and he’s also quite a combustible character.

“How’s he going to work with the likes of Jason Wilcox, who seemingly is going nowhere, and Omar Berrada?

“How’s he going to cope with what is still, I think, quite a problematic dressing room?

“So there’s no guarantee that you change the manager and you get anything other than a short-term impact because that’s what tends to happen whenever a new manager comes in and then the players revert the type.

“So I don’t think Carrick is the biggest problem at the football club. I think the summer window was an abomination and the squad is simply not strong enough to compete on multiple fronts.”

Nagelsmann spent three years in charge of Germany prior to his exit this summer.

He departed the role following his side’s penalty shootout defeat to Paraguay in the last 32 of the World Cup.

It followed a quarter-final loss to Spain for the hosts at Euro 2024 earlier in his tenure.

Who could be United’s next manager?

Nagelsmann is not the only potential candidate to succeed Carrick in the Old Trafford dugout.

talkSPORT understands Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler is seen as an option by the club.

Meanwhile, Premier League title winner Antonio Conte is prepared to take charge of United.

The former Chelsea boss is currently without a club after leaving Napoli in June.

United could face competition for his signature, though, with Juventus also interested in Conte.

He has been identified as their preferred appointment if Luciano Spalletti is sacked.
