Jack Nicholson, the Hollywood star known for his charismatic characters, has been living an increasingly “reclusive” life, reportedly leaving some longtime friends concerned about his health.
The actor, who will be turning 90 next year, has effectively stepped away from the entertainment industry and has made very few public appearances in recent years.
Although Jack Nicholson’s family is in contact with him, he has been very selective with his guest list, and many of his friends, who hope to celebrate the actor, remain uncertain about his day-to-day life.
Friends Struggle With Jack Nicholson’s ‘Reclusive’ Lifestyle
Nicholson’s friends, who have known the actor since the early days of his illustrious career, are concerned about his decision to seclude himself away from much of his former social life.
A source told the National Examiner that friends hope they could celebrate with him at a possible birthday party when he turns 90 next year.
However, their concern partly stems from Nicholson no longer being as social as he once was due to his “reclusive” new lifestyle.
“He used to be the life of the party, so it’s hard for people to accept that he’s just banished himself, but that’s Jack. He’s always been a wildcard,” the source said.
The Actor’s Friends Don’t Know ‘How He’s Really Doing‘

The 89-year-old’s withdrawal appears to be particularly difficult for his friends to reconcile with their fond recollections of the actor in his younger years.
The source added that Nicholson, while very private, “does have people coming and going from the house,” including members of his family. He is, however, “selective about who he sees” and some of his friends haven’t seen him in a very long time.
According to the insider, his friends appear to be respecting his boundaries, as Nicholson has made his intentions very clear: “he doesn’t want anyone dropping over or pestering him to go out for lunch.”
However, they worry about him, and the source explained that “It’s tough being on the outside looking in, especially when he’s so reclusive. No one has a clue how he’s really doing.”
Jack Nicholson’s Family Remains Close, But He Keeps His Friends At A Distance

While Nicholson’s friends may feel shut out of his life, his family is often with him, so he has not entirely isolated himself.
“Lorraine is there all the time, and he gets plenty of visits from Ray and the others too, so it’s not as though he’s completely cut off from the world,” the insider told the publication.
Nicholson is the father of six children, namely Jennifer, 62, whom he shares with ex-wife Sandra Knight, his son Caleb, 55, whose mother is the late Susan Anspach, and Honey, 44, with Danish model Winnie Holman.
He also shares a daughter and son, Lorraine, 36, and Ray, 34, with American actress Rebecca Broussard. His youngest child, Tessa Gourin, was born to actress Jennine Gourin.
Lorraine, who is supposedly “there all the time,” has offered glimpses into her father’s rather private life.
In April 2026, she posted a photo of the legendary actor on Instagram as he celebrated his 89th birthday with his friend Joni Mitchell.
A source previously told the Daily Mail that Nicholson “is doing well; he is happy to be out of the Hollywood spotlight and just enjoys time with his family. He loves being around his children and is very close to them.”
The Actor’s Rare Public Appearances In Recent Times

Nicholson was last seen publicly in February 2025, when he attended the “Saturday Night Live” 50th anniversary special and introduced Adam Sandler.
E! News reported at the time that Lorraine had revealed her father “has a lot of hesitation about appearing in public now,” and because of that, it was “a real battle” to get him to show up for the event.
The actor’s last film role was the 2010 romantic comedy “How Do You Know,” directed by James L. Brooks, and starring alongside Reese Witherspoon, Paul Rudd, Owen Wilson, and Kathryn Hahn.
Before his appearance at the SNL event, he was last seen in 2024 on a Beverly Hills outing, which came three years after his previous public appearance at an LA Lakers game in 2021.
Despite his apparent reclusive lifestyle, Brooks believes Nicholson is likely to return to Hollywood, telling E! News, “I’m sure he’ll be working again. I hope it’s with me.”
Jack Nicholson’s Legendary Career

Nicholson established himself as one of Hollywood’s most recognizable actors and one of the all-time greats.
His memorable performances in films such as “Easy Rider,” “Chinatown,” “The Shining,” “Batman,” “A Few Good Men,” and “As Good as It Gets” helped define his reputation as one of the most charismatic actors in the industry.
The Oscar winner has received three Academy Awards for Best Actor in the 1975 film “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” and “As Good as It Gets,” as well as for Best Supporting Actor for 1983’s “Terms of Endearment.”
He has established a legacy after a career spanning five decades and has largely remained out of the public eye following his final film in 2010.
