Thomas, widely known by his initials JTT, became one of the most recognizable young actors of the 1990s through his role as Randy Taylor on “Home Improvement.”
The ABC sitcom followed television handyman Tim Taylor, played by Tim Allen, and his life with his wife, Jill, and their three sons. Thomas played the intelligent and sarcastic middle child alongside Zachery Ty Bryan and Taran Noah Smith.
“Home Improvement” premiered in 1991 and ran for eight seasons before ending in 1999. Thomas left the regular cast during the final season, and the show explained Randy’s departure through a storyline that sent the character to Costa Rica.
His television success helped turn him into a teen idol whose face appeared across magazines, posters, and other merchandise throughout the decade.
