Fabian Hurzeler aims ‘one team’ dig at Liverpool as Reds record 16-year low during Brighton win

Liverpool beat Brighton despite achieving an unwanted 16-year first at Anfield on Sunday.

The Reds clinched a 2-0 victory thanks to two goals in four minutes as they moved up to fourth in the Premier League.

Pascal Gross’ own goal was followed by Alexander Isak’s sixth league goal of the season to wrap up all three points.

However, the win came despite the visitors having the majority of the ball against Andoni Iraola’s side.

Liverpool’s possession was recorded at just 35.6 per cent, their second-lowest on record in a Premier League home win.

Meanwhile, it was their lowest in a league victory at Anfield since November 2010.

On that occasion, the Reds had 35.3 per cent of the ball in a 2-0 win over Chelsea.

Despite their lack of possession, Liverpool recorded four shots on target to their opponents’ one.

Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler believes only one team ‘tried to win’, though, as he took aim at the hosts following the match.

Speaking at full time, the German claimed: “Everyone in the stadium saw that there was one team who really tried to create and try to win this game and therefore I have to praise my players.

“Everyone in the stadium felt there was a missed opportunity for us, because it’s not only after the goal or the goals they scored.

“Also, before they scored, we had one, two big chances and today I think it was just the difference that they scored, we didn’t score.

“Overall I saw a team with a lot of good things to take away.

“I saw a team that really had the belief in our approach, that stuck to the match plan, that always kept going, and that is very frustrating because we all have the feeling that there is a missed opportunity here today.”

Sunday’s setback ended an eight-match unbeaten run in all competitions for Brighton.

Prior to the defeat, they had not loss since a 4-3 reverse away against Chelsea on August 30.

It was also their fifth successive loss at Anfield, with Brighton winning in the fixture just once in the Premier League since their promotion in 2017.

The result sees the Seagulls remain third in the table, a point ahead of Liverpool.

Hurzeler will be hoping for a response from his side in midweek as they visit Manchester City in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.

The two sides meet again in the Premier League at the Etihad Stadium just three days later.
