Chelsea can no longer attract the Premier League’s hottest prospects, but they have been warned against signing John Stones.
The Blues find themselves under increasing pressure to strengthen their squad in the summer amid a disappointing season which has seen them fail to compete for silverware.

After being dumped out of the Champions League in humiliating fashion with an 8-2 aggregate defeat to Paris Saint-Germain, Liam Rosenior‘s side are now at risk of imploding altogether.
The west Londoners are in a real fight to qualify for next season’s Champions League, having slipped outside the Premier League top five.
A 3-0 loss to Manchester City on Sunday at Stamford Bridge saw them fall to a fourth defeat in five in all competitions.
The underwhelming campaign has left fans frustrated, prompting many to blame the club’s transfer policy under the BlueCo consortium for their woes, which prioritises youth over experience.
It isn’t just supporters who have appeared to take issue with this approach, with defender Marc Cucurella publicly criticising it too.
Stonewall solution?
talkSPORT’s Inside Chelsea panel all agreed that the Blues are in need of some proven experience to become a competitive force again, and host Kweku Afari felt he had just the solution in defence.
Chelsea are yet to settle on a clear centre-back pairing, with no fewer than seven players struggling to stake a claim in the role.
Trevoh Chalobah, Tosin Adarabioyo, Benoit Badiashile, Wesley Fofana, Jorrel Hato, Josh Acheampong and Mamadou Sarr have all played but without excelling, prompting Afari to pitch his idea.
The Blues superfan began: “I know that he’s injury prone, but in terms of experience, in terms of what we need, I like the idea of John Stones.”
Centre-back Stones is out of contract with Man City in the summer, and has been limited to just four Premier League starts this season.

He has previously been a stalwart in Pep Guardiola’s all-conquering sides, winning six Premier Leagues and the 2023 Champions League.
With Stones not expected to be offered a new contract, his proven winner credentials could make him an attractive prospect to Chelsea.
(Not so) Sterling work
Fellow panellist Matisse Armani was not in favour of Afari’s pitch for Stones, who warned the club against repeating past mistakes.
He reminded Afari of Raheem Sterling’s move to Stamford Bridge in 2022, which eventually ended in his contract being torn up in January, having not played for the Blues since May 2024.
Armani said: “Do you remember when we signed Sterling from Man City?
“A player that had won it all, that was coming towards the end of his career, that had already peaked and we’re now talking about Stones or maybe [Nathan] Ake.

“Injury problems – they’re not even playing consistently at their club for a reason.”
Clearly frustrated with the idea, Armani then claimed Chelsea targeting Stones past his prime is a clear indicator of how far past his peak the defender is.
Armani continued: “Man City have replaced those players with Guehi and Khusanov and Gvardiol – when he comes back from injury. He’s still very young.”
“Ruben [Dias] is in the frame and we’re talking about taking leftovers. I mean this is where we are.”
At this point, co-panellist and former Chelsea defender Jason Cundy chimed in: “But we could do with a Stones type character.”
However Armani was unmoved, as he argued: “We absolutely could, but you still have to be performing at your peak to lead.

“You can’t lead in the medical room. You can’t lead if you’re not able to perform consistently and you’re injury prone.
“The reason why we talk about players being leaders like Terry, like Thiago Silva, it’s because they were still performing in the Champions League knockouts week in, week out taking this team to the next level.
“You can’t do that if you’re not consistent yourself, if you’re not playing. And this is the problem we have. We cannot do that.”
Armani: Chelsea cannot compete with top clubs
Armani’s stark warning against signing Stones came after he claimed Chelsea are no longer capable of attracting world class talent.
He said: “The players we used to be able to attain – we used to be able to go to Barcelona and get Pedro, get Cesc Fabregas.
“We used to be able to go to Atletico Madrid and get Diego Costa.”

Comparing the difference between Chelsea’s previous transfers acquisitions and now, he went on: “We can’t go to top clubs and go for their players or even even think about it.
“We couldn’t even go for [Antoine] Semenyo and Marc Guehi in January – we knew as Chelsea fans, we couldn’t compete.
“We couldn’t compete to get a player from Bournemouth and from Crystal Palace who were within our wage caps and transfer fees.
“I mean, Guehi was a bargain. We couldn’t even compete for that. So what players are we really talking about trying to attain here?”
