Katy Perry Mocked For Music Teaser: ‘Stuck In 2010’

Katy Perry took to social media to share a teaser for her new single, “Watch It Burn,” wielding a baseball bat as she sang in what appeared to be a rage room.

The snippet seemingly fell flat with some social media users, who slammed her for being “permanently stuck in 2010” and failing to evolve musically.

After enduring heartbreak following her split from Orlando Bloom, Perry has moved on with her new boyfriend, Justin Trudeau, and recently opened up about how the relationship changed her life.

Katy Perry Teases Fiery New Single

Perry took to her social media page to share a short video of herself singing what appears to be an upcoming track, “Watch It Burn,” where she talks about giving unrequited love but being ready to light it all up.

The 41-year-old singer was dressed in a black jumpsuit and dark boots while holding a baseball bat in what appeared to be a rage room, a place where people go to let off steam by breaking and smashing things.

“You know I gave, and I gave / Now I’m giving up / There’s nothing more you can take / Don’t wanna cause a scene / But give me the gasoline / Tonight’s the night / I light a match,” she sings.

Several internet users disliked the new song and took to social media to share their reactions.

“Why is she so incapable of creating contemporary music? It’s like she’s permanently stuck in 2010,” a Reddit user penned, while another wrote, “It sounds like she asked an AI to make an edgy comeback song.”

“Girl. You have money to just never release another song ever again. Woman’s World was in the pits of hell – Please stop digging,” one user commented.

Someone else added, “It’s actually giving kids bop. Like what in the autotune chat gpt is this? I swear, when most pop girlies turn a certain age, it’s like they’re unable to produce bangers anymore.”

Meanwhile, the vibe on Instagram was different, as fans gushed about the teaser, with one writing, “Song of the summer!”

The past couple of years have been tough for the “Roar” singer. She was one of the participants who embarked on an all-female space trip, but she suffered the most criticism from the venture.

The controversy eventually coincided with the breakdown of her romance with her ex-fiancé, Orlando Bloom, with whom she shares a daughter, Daisy.

In an interview with Justin Tranter on the “UnFamous” podcast, she explained that in the upcoming song, slated to drop June 26, she was wrestling with her “darkness.” She then shared that the track was inspired by events from the past year.

“Last year was pretty rough,” she began. “I have not given myself permission to be angry my whole life over things where I should be f-cking angry about. What I’ve done is I’ve pushed it down, but I should be f-cking angry!”

The host then told her she was “allowed to be angry,” to which she replied, “I’m allowed to be angry for a f-cking moment!”

She went on to say that instead of spiraling into a “woe is me” situation, she allowed herself to feel the pain and anger, learn from it, and move on.

Perry Says Love Has Transformed Her

Despite all that has happened, Perry is doing well in her love life, having moved on with former Canadian leader Justin Trudeau.

Just weeks ago, the pair made their debut as a couple at the Tribeca Film Festival. They have also been spotted at the World Cup, where Perry delivered an electric performance.

Speaking about their relationship on the “UnFamous” podcast, the “Dark Horse” singer told Tranter that it has been transformative for her and has completely changed her outlook on life.

“I have love in my life now. That’s transformed me,” she said, adding that while phrases like “all you need is love” may sound like clichés, they hold deeper meaning once someone experiences that kind of connection.

“It’s like you don’t know until you have your baby how beautiful that experience is and how it transforms you,” she added.

The couple has been seen packing on the PDA since getting together. In fact, the former Canadian prime minister skipped his country’s opening match at the World Cup to support his girlfriend by attending the U.S. game.

When he was called out online, he wrote on X, “Sometimes supportive boyfriend duties call. But you know who I’m rooting for to take the Cup,” alongside a Canadian flag emoji.

During their appearance at the Tribeca Film Festival for the premiere of her concert film, “Katy Perry: The Lifetimes Tour – Live from Paris,” Perry spoke about how meeting Trudeau has been an “anchor” for her.

“I am very in love. And actually, that show was after I met the love of my life, and so I felt very anchored by that because I’m a little bit like a rainbow kite,” she said during a Q&A session, per PEOPLE. “I fly super high and touch the veil… cosmos… and sometimes I need to be anchored. So, to have that anchor finally makes me feel really whole now.”
