Manchester United make immediate decision on Michael Carrick’s future after Chelsea defeat

Michael Carrick is expected to be in the Manchester United dugout on Tuesday night against Roma, talkSPORT understands.

United were beaten 2-0 by Chelsea on Saturday afternoon and went down to ten man when Lisandro Martinez was sent off.

The Red Devils are highly unlikely to make a head coach change until the upcoming international break at the earliest, even though the hierarchy held summit talks.

Senior boardroom figures are still hoping Carrick can turn around the club’s worst start to a season since the 1986/87 campaign.

Carrick is preparing to be in charge for the Champions League clash at home to Roma.

United will then welcome Aston Villa to Old Trafford on November 8.

Dismal United run continues

Carrick was on course for a first United victory since September 10 as they led after half an hour through Matheus Cunha.

However, the forward was found to be in an offside position and the goal was ruled out.

Morgan Rogers waltzed through their defence and chipped over Senne Lammens at the start of the second half to put Chelsea ahead.

Martinez was then shown two yellow cards in quick succession, the second of which saw him hit Wesley Fofana in the face with his arm.

Cole Palmer scored the penalty despite the best efforts of Lammens, and Estevao Willian had a second goal disallowed for the hosts.

United missed a string of chances, particularly during the first half, and fell to their fourth league defeat as a result.

Manchester City, Brighton, Atletico Madrid, Como, Bournemouth and Chelsea have all beaten United since they beat Sabah FK last month.

United have also drawn with Fulham, Tottenham and Leeds United in their winless run of nine matches.

They only remain outside the bottom three on goal difference, with Crystal Palace, Nottingham Forest and Sunderland all below them.

Defeat to Roma during the week could see them slip down into the elimination zone of the Champions League.

Meanwhile, a similar result against Villa next weekend may see them enter the international break as a relegation-threatend side.
